Frequently Asked Questions
My internet isn’t working at all. What should I do first?
Start with these quick checks:
- Make sure your router and modem are plugged in and powered on
- Check that all cables are firmly connected
- Restart your modem and router (turn them off for 30 seconds, then back on)
- See if the internet works on another device
If it’s still not working, there may be a service outage in your area.
How do I restart my router properly?
- Turn off your router and modem
- Unplug them from the power socket
- Wait at least 30 seconds
- Plug the modem back in first and wait for all lights to stabilize
- Plug in the router and wait 2-3 minutes
This solves many common connection problems.
My internet is slow. Why?
Slow speeds can be caused by:
- Too many devices using the connection at once
- Streaming, gaming, or large downloads in progress
- Weak Wi-Fi signal or interference
- Outdated hardware or devices
Try moving closer to the router, disconnecting unused devices, or restarting your equipment.
Why does my Wi-Fi keep dropping?
Common reasons include:
- Router placement (too far away or blocked by walls)
- Interference from other Wi-Fi networks or electronic devices
- An overloaded or aging router
Placing your router in a central, open location often improves stability.
How can I improve my Wi-Fi signal at home?
You can improve Wi-Fi performance by:
- Placing the router in a central, elevated position
- Keeping it away from thick walls and metal objects
- Using a Wi-Fi extender or mesh system for larger homes
- Updating your router’s firmware
- Purchasing a mesh or, if outdoors, an outdoor extender
Some devices connect, but others don’t. What should I check?
- Make sure you’re using the correct Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password
- Restart the affected device
- Forget the network and reconnect
- Check if the device is compatible with your router’s Wi-Fi settings
Is there an outage in my area?
If your connection suddenly stops working and restarts don’t help, there may be a temporary outage. Check our News page or contact customer support for updates.
How do I test my internet speed?
To run a speed test using the BARC Connects CommandIQ app, follow these steps:
- Open the BARC Connects CommandIQ app on your mobile device.
- Navigate to the “My Network” section.
- Tap on the Bandwidth Test icon.
- Select Run Test to initiate the speed test, which will measure the speed between your router and the internet, as well as between any mesh units and the router.
Speeds may vary depending on device, location, and time of day.
